The security edit
Models, protection and prices — from the U.S. presidential limousine to factory protection sedans and discreet luxury-SUV conversions.
The Beast, the U.S. presidential limousine, is the natural starting point for a guide to armored luxury cars. Its state-car status sets it apart from the BMW Protection, Mercedes-Benz GUARD and independently armored vehicles a private buyer might actually commission. Understanding that difference makes the rest of this world easier to navigate.

Purpose-built state car · publicly introduced in 2018
The Beast — the U.S. presidential limousine
The Beast is the defining presidential limousine: a vehicle whose formal presence serves an office rather than a private owner. General Motors describes it as a custom-built state car wearing Cadillac design cues. The generation covered here debuted in 2018; its CT6-inspired styling does not make it a stretched production CT6. Its tall roof, substantial passenger compartment, upright glazing and broad front end create a silhouette unlike an ordinary executive sedan.
The builder is GM, working to the requirements of the U.S. Secret Service. Public exterior details are enough to explain its ceremonial character, but they do not establish armor thickness, a civilian resistance class or the specification of its protected cabin. This profile therefore leaves its engine, exact mass and undisclosed systems unquantified. Its passenger environment should be understood through its official transport role, rather than an imagined specification of leather, screens or hidden equipment.
A useful distinction remains in 2026: the Secret Service’s announcement of a new protection SUV concerns an addition to its protective fleet. It should not be read as proof that a new generation of the traditional Beast sedan has replaced this publicly documented car.
For a civilian buyer, the meaningful lesson is the difference between a state program and a purchasable protection vehicle. The Beast has no retail configuration, commercial warranty or ordering process. Its purpose-built support requirements also make comparison with a privately owned luxury sedan inherently limited.

Three routes to protection
State car, factory model or independent conversion?
A state program
The Beast is a government-purpose vehicle with no civilian retail route. Its reported construction cost has a different meaning from the price of a private car.
Factory protection
BMW Protection, Mercedes-Benz GUARD and Audi Security are manufacturer-defined specialist vehicles. Identify the protected version and its exact generation when seeking a quotation.
Independent armoring
A specialist converts a manufacturer’s luxury vehicle. Name that specialist, identify the donor vehicle and establish how the finished configuration is documented and supported.
Read the protection label in context
Whole-vehicle certification, glazing classification and a converter’s stated material standard describe different scopes. BMW’s VR9 whole-vehicle statement and INKAS’s CEN 1063 BR6 wording cannot be exchanged merely because both concern armor. Ask for the certificate, tested configuration and applicable standard for the actual vehicle. A higher rating for some glass or body areas does not elevate every part of the car to that level.
Reference examples: BMW: whole-vehicle certification INKAS: published BR6 terminology.

Factory protection sedan · G70-based generation unveiled in 2023
BMW 7 Series Protection

BMW’s combustion-powered 7 Series Protection takes a deliberately discreet approach to executive security. The G70-based sedan retains the tall luxury-sedan body, large twin-kidney grille and split front lighting familiar from the regular 7 Series. Its long rear compartment favors chauffeured travel without the conspicuous stretch of a ceremonial limousine.
The car is engineered and built as a factory BMW protection model. Its integrated protective structure is part of the vehicle’s development, with specialist chassis provisions and assisted operation of the heavy doors. The 2023 launch specification identifies a 4.4-liter V8, 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance and xDrive all-wheel drive, with whole-vehicle protection classified VR9. Higher resistance described for the glazing does not turn the whole car into a VR10 vehicle.
Rear-seat comfort is central to its appeal: BMW offers a generously appointed passenger area and configuration choices intended for prolonged journeys. Buyers should distinguish the standard protection specification from optional rear-seat packages when comparing quotations. The practical compromise is support: specialist tires, protected glazing, door systems and approved servicing must fit the owner’s operating locations. A low-mileage dealer listing supplies a useful price reference, but its equipment schedule still needs to match the required order.

Factory protection sedan · W223-era GUARD, introduced in 2021
Mercedes-Benz S 680 GUARD 4MATIC

The S 680 GUARD presents protective engineering through the familiar elegance of a long S-Class. Its horizontal-bar grille, standing hood ornament and swept headlamps preserve a formal sedan identity. This is the factory GUARD model, built by Mercedes-Benz; the Maybach conversion later in this guide is a different vehicle and procurement route.
Mercedes-Benz’s 2021 announcement describes an integrated protective structure, a V12 powertrain, all-wheel drive and VPAM VR10 protection certified by Beschussamt Ulm. Four- and five-seat layouts were announced. Cabin trim and rear-seat appointments depend on specification, so the number of seats in an individual offer matters as much as the model name.
The illustrated exterior represents the generation corresponding to the used 2022 price example. That vehicle is advertised with four seats and a restrained graphite finish, positioning it as a chauffeured executive car rather than an extended ceremonial limousine. Its attraction is the combination of conventional S-Class presentation and manufacturer-developed protection. The buying compromise is the distinction between an original specification and the condition of a used protected car: service history, door mechanisms, glazing and equipment documentation deserve vehicle-specific examination. The old factory starting price is useful historical context, but it cannot replace a current complete-car quotation.

Factory electric protection sedan · unveiled in 2023
BMW i7 Protection

The i7 Protection brings an electric drivetrain to the formal protection sedan. Its G70-based proportions, large front grille and divided lighting keep it visually close to the combustion 7 Series Protection, while its fully electric operation creates a different ownership proposition. The blue illustration is a separate design image, not a photograph of a quoted BMW.
In its 2023 launch material, BMW identifies two electric motors, all-wheel drive and VR9 whole-vehicle protection. The model was developed by BMW as a factory protection vehicle, rather than an ordinary i7 subsequently armored by an independent company. BMW’s current protection-vehicle overview continues to name both electric and combustion offerings; the original launch restricted i7 Protection availability to Europe, so present market eligibility needs an individual inquiry.
The intended experience is a spacious executive passenger compartment with the quiet character of electric propulsion. The decisive compromise is operational planning: suitable charging at home and on regular journeys, servicing access and range for the actual protected configuration. The range of a standard i7 or i7 M70 should not be substituted for this heavier specialist model. A quotation should identify the protected vehicle’s equipment, usable operating assumptions and delivery market together.

Factory protection sedan · facelift D5; advertised 2024 example
Audi A8 L Security

Audi’s A8 L Security favors discretion through a long, restrained sedan silhouette. The facelift D5 body combines the broad Singleframe grille with slim lighting and an extended rear-door area. It is the Security version of Audi’s flagship, not a regular A8 L with an assumed protection package and not the distinct China-market Horch.
Audi’s enhanced-A8 announcement explicitly identifies the A8 L Security with a biturbo V8 and 48-volt mild-hybrid technology. The Auto Seredin advertisement on LuxuryPulse describes its passenger cell as VR9 and the transparent areas as resistance class 10. Those are attributed seller specifications here; the higher glazing designation must not be presented as VR10 for the complete car.
The advertised 2024 example describes heated and ventilated seating and rear entertainment, creating a useful picture of an executive passenger configuration. The actual equipment and protective documentation should be matched to the particular chassis before purchase. Its practical compromise is procurement certainty: a visible listing is a stock reference, not confirmation that fresh factory allocations remain available in every market. The price below was observed on the listing platform and was not independently reconfirmed with Auto Seredin.

Factory protection SUV · G05 facelift announced in 2023
BMW X5 Protection VR6

The X5 Protection VR6 is the factory-protected SUV for readers who prefer a higher seating position to a long sedan. This profile concerns the G05 facelift announced in 2023, recognizable through its revised slim headlamps and updated front fascia. BMW develops the protection within the model program, leaving the exterior close to a conventional X5.
BMW’s launch specification identifies a V8 with 48-volt mild-hybrid assistance, xDrive and adapted chassis engineering. It also states whole-vehicle certification according to VPAM ballistic and explosive-resistance guidelines. The current BMW model page identifies the vehicle as Protection VR6. That is a particular factory model, not a shorthand for every independently armored X5.
Its interior character combines familiar premium-SUV appointments with a security-specific passenger environment. When ordering, rear seating, cargo use and protected-vehicle payload should be considered together rather than inferred from an unarmored X5 brochure. The practical compromise is matching family or support-vehicle duties to the actual approved loading and maintenance requirements. A historical dealer amount gives scale, but a current quote must cover the complete VR6 vehicle. A lower-priced X5 carrying a different protection designation is not automatically the same product.

Historical factory SVO project · L405 generation
Range Rover Sentinel — 2019 V8

The 2019 V8 Sentinel combines the classic L405 Range Rover shape with a factory-developed security identity. Its upright body, floating roof and conventional door handles distinguish it from the later L460 generation. Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations engineered and built the vehicle, rather than lending its name to a third-party conversion.
JLR’s March 4, 2019 announcement identifies a 5.0-liter supercharged V8, a protected passenger cell and testing according to VPAM BRV 2009 VR8 alongside stated blast standards. The same material describes improved cabin space and seating and the Touch Pro Duo interior. These are specifications of the historical V8 Sentinel, not an assurance about a currently obtainable new Range Rover.
The appeal lies in a familiar luxury-SUV posture and a rear compartment intended for protected travel. Its practical compromise today is age and support: a prospective owner needs the history and documentation of an actual surviving vehicle, together with access to appropriate parts and service. No current public price or new-build availability for this precise V8 version was verified. The earlier Sentinel’s 2015 price can explain the program’s original market position, but it cannot be transferred to the 2019 V8.

Independent conversion · seller-advertised VR6 example
Rolls-Royce Cullinan Series II — armored conversion

The armored Cullinan Series II reference brings a different kind of presence: a tall, formal SUV shaped around Rolls-Royce luxury. The illustration follows the Series II front-lighting theme, upright Pantheon grille and coach-door silhouette, with the standard unextended body. It is not a depiction of a lengthened conversion or the seller’s actual stock vehicle.
Hollmann’s listing advertises a complete Cullinan Series II as armored VR6, with a V12 and a four-seat cabin. It lists individual seating and rear-cabin comfort equipment, reinforcing the vehicle’s chauffeur-oriented character. The published page does not identify who performed the armoring. It would therefore be inaccurate to assign INKAS, KLASSEN or another converter, or to describe it as a factory Rolls-Royce protection program.
The buying distinction is documentation rather than prestige alone. The seller’s VR6 wording needs to be matched to the actual vehicle’s armoring records and test scope. A polished grille and luxurious passenger compartment cannot establish ballistic performance. Its practical compromise is coordinating support between the original vehicle manufacturer and the unidentified conversion supplier. Before treating this as a usable ownership proposition, establish responsibility for protected glazing, door mechanisms, suspension changes and warranty coverage.

Historical independent conversion · project presented September 2019
Bentley Bentayga W12 — INKAS conversion

The original Bentayga W12 presents British luxury in a substantial SUV body. Four round front lamp units, the mesh grille and rounded hood identify the pre-facelift generation used for INKAS’s 2019 project. This is not the later extended-wheelbase Bentayga or a factory Bentley GUARD model.
In its September 4, 2019 announcement, INKAS describes a 6.0-liter twin-turbo W12, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a cabin finished with bespoke veneers, rich trim and familiar Bentley controls. The armoring company describes its conversion as meeting CEN 1063 BR6 ballistic standards. That wording is retained as its claim; it is not converted into a VPAM whole-vehicle resistance class.
Its appeal is the combination of an older W12 luxury-SUV character and a discreet security conversion. Because the announcement is historical, it cannot prove that the identical specification is still available as a new order. Current sourcing would need an actual donor vehicle or existing armored example and a supplier willing to support it. The practical compromise is the age of the platform and conversion: verify serviceability, documentation and preserved cabin features before comparing it with contemporary factory models. The launch’s price shorthand also requires care because the source does not resolve the dollar currency.

Independent conversion · documented in February 2026
Mercedes-Maybach S 680 — INKAS conversion

The Mercedes-Maybach S 680 prioritizes the rear passenger as the center of the luxury experience. Its long Z223 body, generous rear-door area, vertical chrome grille and distinctive trim make it more expressive than the conventional S-Class GUARD. The two-tone illustration follows that separate Maybach identity.
INKAS is the armoring company for this conversion. Its February 9, 2026 overview specifically distinguishes the S 680’s 6.0-liter biturbo V12 from the S 580’s V8. The combined conversion page advertises full-perimeter armoring up to CEN 1063 BR6. Since parts of that page’s drivetrain narrative describe the S 580, its V8 figures must not be transferred to the S 680.
The intended cabin character remains chauffeured and indulgent, with passenger comfort equipment depending on the selected car and conversion specification. An inquiry should name S 680 explicitly and request the preserved rear-seat features, actual protection schedule and test documentation. The practical compromise is responsibility across two parties: vehicle construction and armoring come from different organizations. Confirm who supports the chassis, electronics, protected windows and door equipment in the intended destination. This route is also distinct from purchasing the factory S 680 GUARD with its documented VR10 classification.
Sources: INKAS: S 580 / S 680 conversion scope INKAS: 2026 S 680 V12 overview and quotation.
Independent conversion · documented X167 First Edition configuration
Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 — INKAS conversion

The Maybach GLS 600 gives the protected passenger a high-roof SUV interpretation of the marque’s luxury. Its vertical grille, bright exterior trim and upright cabin distinguish it from an ordinary GLS. The illustration represents the original X167 First Edition exterior referenced by INKAS, with a burgundy-and-silver finish used as an editorial color choice.
INKAS’s conversion page identifies a 4.0-liter biturbo V8, a nine-speed automatic transmission and a comfort-focused interior with air suspension. The company describes the vehicle’s armoring using CEN 1063 BR6 terminology. That is its published conversion claim, not an independently established VPAM VR6 or VR10 classification in this article.
This model suits a buyer drawn to Maybach passenger appointments but preferring an SUV body and a higher view outward. The equipment actually retained after armoring should be recorded in the quotation, especially seating, passenger controls and any requested custom cabin work. Its practical compromise is defining the build precisely: a generic GLS 600 brochure cannot establish the conversion’s model year, seat layout, payload or support arrangements. The quoted vehicle needs its own evidence and complete specification. It should be identified as an INKAS conversion, rather than an assumed factory GLS GUARD program.
Sources: INKAS: GLS 600 conversion, powertrain and quotation.
Independent conversion · fifth-generation extended-body ESV
Cadillac Escalade ESV — INKAS conversion

The Escalade ESV supplies the unmistakable presence of a large American luxury SUV. Its extended rear body, tall roof, broad Cadillac grille and vertical lighting create a different silhouette from the short Escalade. The illustration represents the fifth-generation ESV’s pre-2025-facelift exterior; it does not depict the electric Escalade IQ or a custom stretched limousine.
INKAS’s ESV-specific description identifies a 6.2-liter V8 with a ten-speed automatic transmission and rear- or four-wheel-drive options. The company describes its discreet armoring using CEN 1063 BR6 terminology. It also discusses independent rear suspension and optional door assistance. These are the converter’s specifications, rather than a factory Cadillac protection designation.
INKAS separately announced a 2025 Escalade project. That family announcement does not remove the need to identify the exact ESV year, facelift, drivetrain and seating schedule in an order. The attraction is a substantial passenger environment and extended-body practicality; usable luggage space and payload should be checked for the finished armored configuration. Its practical compromise is size: parking, access to garages, loading and local support must all suit the actual ESV. A quote for an ordinary armored Escalade or an earlier bespoke VIP package is not automatically an ESV price.
Sources: INKAS: ESV-specific model and quotation INKAS: separate May 2025 Escalade update.
Beyond the donor vehicle
Why armored luxury cars cost more
A complete protection vehicle involves more than adding material to a finished car. The supplier must integrate the protected passenger environment with doors, glazing, suspension, braking, electrical systems and the required equipment. Engineering, testing and documentation form part of the specification, while cabin customization and a small-volume build can add further work.
Quotes differ because the protection scope, underlying vehicle, passenger layout and support arrangements differ. Compare the delivered configuration: a used factory sedan, an independent luxury-SUV conversion and a historical state-car estimate are not equivalent purchases. The amount that matters is the written price for the complete vehicle you can actually obtain.
Choose for the real journey
Choosing an armored luxury car
Begin with the required passenger arrangement and a professionally defined protection brief. Then match the actual vehicle to those needs. A sedan may favor rear-seat travel; an SUV may suit a different seating position or loading requirement. Neither body style determines protection quality by itself.
- Identify the build. Confirm the model, generation, model year, chassis identity and who performed the armoring.
- Read the documents. Obtain the vehicle-specific protection record, certificate and scope, including any optional protection areas.
- Check the finished configuration. Confirm seating, usable passenger space, permitted mass and remaining payload.
- Plan support. Establish parts access, maintenance responsibility and warranty coverage after conversion.
- Compare a complete price. Record the currency, gross or net basis, equipment, delivery conditions and seller-confirmed availability.
Think beyond your local market
International buying: LHD, RHD and vehicle documentation
LHD means left-hand drive; RHD means right-hand drive. These identify the steering-wheel position, not the side of the road on which traffic moves. Availability must be confirmed for the exact protection model, manufacturer or converter and destination market. A steering conversion should never be assumed to be a standard factory option.
Before comparing offers across borders, assemble the ownership and service history, armoring documents, vehicle mass and loading records, equipment schedule and warranty terms. Confirm applicable export, import and registration requirements with the relevant authorities for the actual destination. For an i7 Protection, include charging compatibility and operating information for the protected version.
Armored vehicles can be searched for in ALVAU’s dedicated armored-vehicles section: Armored Vehicles on ALVAU. You can also search its broader Cars and Motorcycles department and the Cars category. According to the brand, ALVAU operates in over 170 countries, making it a place to begin a wider international search. Availability and the documents for an individual vehicle remain questions for the actual seller.
The questions that matter
Armored luxury cars: FAQ
Can a private buyer purchase The Beast?
No. The presidential state car is not a retail vehicle. The reported USD 1.5 million construction estimate is not a sale price or an invitation to order one.
How much does an armored luxury car cost?
The reference depends on the model and transaction: this guide includes particular dealer asking prices, historical amounts and models requiring quotation. Compare complete protected vehicles in the same currency and tax basis rather than treating every figure as current MSRP.
Is an armoring-service price the same as a complete-car price?
No. A donor vehicle, the armoring work and the finished protected car are different price bases. A useful quotation lists what is supplied, what equipment is retained, taxes and delivery costs. Adding an unverified generic armor allowance to ordinary MSRP does not establish a real price.
What distinguishes factory protection from an independent conversion?
A factory protection model is developed and supplied through the manufacturer’s specialist program. A conversion is built by an armoring company around a manufacturer’s vehicle. The builder, documentation, warranty responsibilities and local support need to be identified for either route.
Do BR6 and VR6 mean the same thing?
Do not assume that they do. CEN 1063 / EN 1063 glazing terminology and VPAM vehicle-resistance classifications belong to different standards and testing scopes. Obtain the actual documents rather than a numerical crosswalk; seller shorthand alone is insufficient.
Does armor affect comfort and payload?
Its additional mass and changes to glazing, doors and structure make vehicle-specific engineering and loading limits important. Factory programs and converters describe their own comfort solutions. Check the finished car’s seating, permitted mass, remaining payload and support requirements rather than using an unarmored brochure.
Are there fully electric protection sedans?
Yes. BMW’s i7 Protection is a documented factory electric model with two motors and VR9 classification. Verify current market eligibility, the armored configuration’s operating range and charging compatibility; standard i7 figures are not substitutes.
Where can I begin an international armored-car search?
Begin with ALVAU’s dedicated armored-vehicles section and ALVAU’s cars-and-motorcycles department. Compare the documentation and price basis of actual listings. Mention of a model in this guide does not establish that the same vehicle is currently offered on ALVAU.
