Handmade Bespoke Shoes for Men and Women: An International Guide

An international guide to measured footwear, workshop traditions, men’s and women’s commissions, contacts and questions for a maker.

ALVAU MAGAZINE · Craft & Style

A practical guide to measured footwear, the people who make it, and the questions that turn an idea into a commission.

Official-source research checked October 13, 2026.

A pair of shoes made around your measurements begins with a conversation: how you want to dress, what you need from the shape, and which details matter to you. The result may be a restrained Oxford, a softly proportioned flat, a bridal heel, or a boot with a personal line. The craft lies in translating those choices into a last, a pattern, and a finished pair.

Looking for shoes made around your measurements? Start with ALVAU's Tailoring shoes to measure service category and explore bespoke shoemaking for men and women.

This international guide follows twelve country chapters, with five US destinations: New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago and Washington, D.C.. It documents 21 location profiles representing 19 independent makers across 15 cities, plus a separate discussion of Rio de Janeiro. Canons appears at its London workshop and at two US appointment locations. Women’s and men’s services are checked separately throughout, including the measurement method and design scope.

What Makes a Shoe Truly Made to Measure?

Start with the practical question: what changes because the shoemaker has measured your feet? At John Lobb in London, measurements and tracings lead to a last carved from a solid wooden block. At Meisterschuh, a beechwood blank is adapted to the wearer. Both descriptions involve a personal working form, but the last-making methods differ.

Official sources: John Lobb craft · Meisterschuh last-making

Bespoke normally describes a commission in which the last, pattern, and design are developed for the individual. The important evidence is the work performed, including how fit is assessed. A last can be carved anew or individually transformed; the maker should explain which approach applies to your pair. Do not assume that every business using the word bespoke follows the same sequence.

Made-to-measure and semi-bespoke often begin with an existing last or design that is modified for the wearer. Corthay provides a clear example: Petite Mesure adapts a ready-to-wear last and uses established patterns, while Grande-Mesure gives the customer an exclusive last and a wider design brief. Ask the maker to explain what the chosen tier changes in the last, pattern, and design.

Official sources: Corthay measured services

Made-to-order can be an excellent way to choose leather, color, or design details without altering the last to individual foot measurements. Yohei Fukuda separates that service from its two measured bespoke tiers: its MTO offer does not include the personal-last and trial-fitting program. Ready-to-wear uses established sizes; additional widths or half sizes do not, on their own, establish a measured commission.

Ask a second question about handwork. Hand cutting, hand lasting, hand welting, hand stitching of the sole, and hand finishing are different operations. A handmade description should not be expanded into a claim that no machine is used. Equally, a laborious handmade ready-to-wear shoe remains ready-to-wear if its last is not developed for the individual customer.

Men's and Women's Bespoke Footwear

The women's measured offer in this guide includes far more than changes to a ready-made heel. Massaro describes prototype adjustments to straps, upper lines, and heel profiles. Petrocchi explicitly offers women choices of style, heel height, and leather combinations within its su misura process. Canons confirms footwear for women while drawing a different boundary: it does not make high heels.

Official sources: Massaro ordering · Petrocchi su misura · Canons women's service

For a heel or bridal shoe, prepare a brief that identifies the intended height, toe shape, fastening, upper line, and occasion. For flats, loafers, or lace-ups, discuss the volume over the instep, the opening, and how much adjustment the maker can provide. These are questions for the commission, not guarantees that a workshop offers every design or will achieve a particular wearing experience.

Men's commissions can be equally varied. A formal lace-up, a loafer, a monk strap, and a boot raise different design and fastening questions. Bring a clear description of intended use, preferred leather and sole, and the style details you want to preserve. The maker can then explain whether the design fits its measured service, an adapted-last option, or a separate made-to-order range.

The guide follows each house's published scope. A missing women's or men's label is recorded as not stated, rather than translated into a refusal. A current women's bespoke page is stronger evidence than a historical famous client; a stock women's collection is not evidence that the maker offers personal lasts for women.

Four Shoe Styles to Bring to the First Conversation

A useful design brief starts with a silhouette. The photographs below were generated with AI as generic footwear concepts, with no manufacturer attribution. They illustrate styles discussed in this guide. Materials, construction, heel proportions, and fitting options must be agreed with the chosen maker for an actual commission.

How This Guide Was Researched

Research was checked on October 13, 2026, using the makers' official service, history, and customer-contact pages. Customer reviews, testimonials, reseller descriptions, press rankings, and social profiles were excluded from the evidence used for the profiles. This is a desk-researched guide; no workshop visit, shoe order, or wearing test was performed.

The table compares documented scope and process, not comfort scores or a ranking. Prices retain the currency actually published in the reviewed source. They are dated examples of a service quote or starting price, with surcharges and later-pair prices distinguished where relevant. Contact the maker for the terms that apply to a new commission.

Compare the Documented Services

Read the last and fitting column alongside the separate women’s and men’s scope. The 21 rows compare places where a commission can begin, representing 19 independent makers. Canons’ Miami and Washington appointments are listed separately from its London workshop. Permanent workshops, showrooms, and temporary trunk-show venues are labeled by their actual role. Rio de Janeiro is discussed in its own chapter.

United States

The US selection now covers New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, D.C. Brooklyn is part of New York City. Role Club documents manufacture in Los Angeles, while Alexandria Wills has a Chicago studio. Miami and Washington provide measured commissions through Canons’ visiting appointments, with production in London. The contact details below identify the correct city and the role of each location.

New York City

Francis Waplinger

Workshop

Francis Waplinger makes bespoke footwear in his Brooklyn studio at Industry City, within New York City. His professional background connects Italian training with American practice: the official biography names Angelo Imperatrice, Roberto Ugolini, and Marcell Mrsan among his teachers. It does not publish a founding year for the business.

The house gives women and men separate bespoke and pricing pages. The women's page presents wholecut and brogued Oxfords, with hand-stitched soles and optional sole decoration. The men's page includes saddle shoes, Adelaide designs, and loafers, alongside a choice of hand-stitched constructions. This is a useful starting point for women seeking tailored lace-ups as well as men commissioning formal footwear.

Measurements inform a personal wooden last, followed by test shoes. New clients need at least two fitting appointments; the ordering page says three are common. The first commission is described as taking approximately 14–16 months. Subsequent pairs on an established last have a shorter wait, without new test shoes.

For both women and men, the published starting prices are USD 6,000 for shoes and USD 6,800 for boots, including a one-time USD 700 last fee. Later orders on the same last exclude that fee. Prices are before tax and shipping; the published deposit is 50%. These are workshop prices checked on October 13, 2026, rather than trunk-show quotes.

Miami

Canons — Miami Trunk Shows

Visiting measurement and fitting appointments; London manufacture

Canons publishes Miami appointments at the Four Seasons on Brickell Avenue, within the City of Miami. The house describes visits two or three times a year. Clients begin a London-made commission through a visiting last-maker; the hotel is the consultation venue.

The private, hour-long appointment with Simon Bolzoni includes measurements and observations of the feet, discussion of the intended footwear, and an introduction to archive samples and leather options. The London profile below explains the house’s making process.

Women’s and men’s commissions follow that same house scope. For a Miami enquiry, name the intended model and ask how later fittings will be arranged. Canons excludes high heels, a useful boundary when comparing women’s footwear specialists.

The reviewed Miami page referred to the fall visit without a precise date. Obtain the date, appointment confirmation, quote, and fitting sequence directly from Canons. Its Palm Beach visits are a separate destination and should be booked accordingly.

Los Angeles

Role Club — Brian the Bootmaker

Los Angeles bootmaking workshop; appointment address to be confirmed

Role Club is Brian the Bootmaker’s Los Angeles workshop practice, centered on engineer boots and related lace-up designs. His biography describes learning from Ignacio Palacios from 2010, initially through repairing vintage boots. The reviewed pages establish Los Angeles manufacture but give no business founding year.

The black horsehide engineer-boot page confirms work to the customer’s measurements, with hand-lasting and hand-welting onto a leather footbed. The custom-order menu also presents Boondocker and other lace-up designs. Discuss construction, leather, sole, and height for the particular model.

The maker calls the service bespoke, while personal-last development and a trial-pair sequence remain unspecified in the reviewed pages. A separate women’s or men’s measured menu was not found. Ask about the intended wearer and the fitting method before choosing the design.

The boot enquiry page estimates 12–14 months, subject to change. Each pair is quoted individually; the FAQ publishes a USD 1,000 deposit credited to the total. Request the full price, current wait, appointment address, and adjustment terms. The deposit does not establish a starting price.

Chicago

Alexandria Wills Shoemaking Studio

Workshop and showroom

In Chicago’s Pilsen district, Alexandria Wills combines a shoemaking studio, showroom, and teaching practice. Her introduction identifies her as a shoemaker and fashion designer working with individual measurements. The published studio address is on South Halsted Street; a founding year is not stated.

Custom orders begin with a consultation and in-person measurements. A last is made for the foot and intended shoe shape, followed by a fit pair. The studio adjusts the form before final production. Ask which later design changes would require another last.

The collection includes a named men’s dress shoe, heeled mules, slingbacks, low shoes, and boots. The slingback page offers a custom-size request. For a women’s or men’s enquiry, specify the model and distinguish a shop-size order from the separate personal-last and fit-pair commission.

Request an all-in quote for that full process; online model prices and class fees are separate. Custom projects receive individual timelines. The contact page also gives conditions for considering adjustments to unworn shoes. Agree on the price, schedule, and terms directly with the studio.

Washington, D.C.

Canons — Washington, D.C. Trunk Shows

Visiting measurement and fitting appointments; London manufacture

Canons publishes Washington, D.C. appointments at the Willard Hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue NW, within the District of Columbia. Its visiting last-maker offers private consultations connected to the London workshop. The hotel is a temporary appointment venue, with manufacture in London.

The city page describes an hour with Simon Bolzoni for measurements, notes about individual requirements, and discussion of samples and leather. Last-making and pattern work take place in London. Clients based in Washington can begin with the person developing the fit.

The women’s and men’s scope follows the London service. Describe the desired shoe and any occasion deadline, then ask about later visits, the trial fitting, and delivery. Obtain a quote covering the selected commission and its appointment arrangements.

Checked on October 13, 2026, the page lists October 31 and November 1, 2026, and describes three visits a year. Reconfirm dates and availability before booking. This Washington entry and the Miami entry provide two appointment routes to the same Canons workshop.

United Kingdom — London

London offers two clearly documented examples with different first-pair fitting approaches. Both also publish a current women's measured offer, although their design boundaries differ.

John Lobb, London

Workshop and shop

The independent, family-owned John Lobb at 9 St James's Street is a London bespoke workshop and shop. Its official history begins with the founder's bootmaking in 1849 and records the opening of a London shop in 1866. The family's London operation should be identified by its johnlobb1849.com website when arranging a commission.

Both women and men have dedicated footwear pages. The women's offering extends beyond a smaller men's shoe: it includes court shoes, strap designs, lace-ups, ankle boots, long boots, and slippers. The bespoke options page describes choices of leather, toe shape, sole material, welt, finish, and decorative details. Readers interested in formal lace-ups or a distinctive court shoe can discuss those elements with the fitter.

The craft description explains a last carved from a solid block of maple, beech, or hornbeam, using measurements, tracings, and notes. Its fitting practice is distinctive. According to the FAQ, the workshop normally completes the first pair before fitting it, rather than making trial shoes; most customers need one fitting. A personal last is therefore not, by itself, evidence of a trial-shoe stage.

The FAQ estimates approximately six to seven months for a first pair, potentially longer, and three to four months for later pairs. It specifies a 50% deposit. Request a written quotation for the exact style, materials, shoe trees, and current appointment schedule; no usable bespoke price was identified in the pages reviewed for this guide.

Canons

Workshop

Canons makes footwear in its London workshop on Northampton Street. The company describes itself as a privately owned family business and traces the workshop's heritage to 1840. That is a statement of lineage, rather than evidence that the current Canons trading name was established in that year. Its craftspeople work on site, giving the workshop a clear local manufacturing identity.

The FAQ explicitly confirms made-to-measure shoes for men and women, using the same handmade processes. It also sets a useful design boundary: Canons does not make high heels or excessively pointed toes. Women seeking classic leather footwear can investigate the service, while a client seeking a high-heeled evening design should discuss a different specialist.

The last-maker records both feet and hand-sculpts a personal beechwood last. Patterns, cutting, closing, and shoemaking then follow. For a first pair, the house describes a trial fitting before attaching the outer sole. Personal lasts remain in the workshop for future orders. The FAQ also confirms hand-welted construction throughout the footwear service.

The house gives an average first-pair timescale of around nine months, affected by factors such as the client's availability for fittings. Ask for a current quote and the fitting dates before arranging travel. For later care, the FAQ recommends returning its shoes to the workshop for resoling. That is a house-specific aftercare instruction, useful to discuss when comparing commissions.

France — Paris

Paris brings together women's couture commissions and a house with a strongly defined men's design identity. Appointment salons and workshops are identified according to the makers' descriptions.

Maison Massaro

Manufacturer; appointment salons

Founded in 1894, Maison Massaro connects couture shoemaking with private commissions for women and men. Its history includes the two-tone sandal made for Gabrielle Chanel in 1957. The house describes a team of specialists, including last-makers, cutters, closers, and shoemakers, rather than attributing every operation to a single artisan.

Women's footwear is central to the current offer. The official site specifically invites bridal commissions, while its ordering page gives separate women's and men's prices. Design discussion can cover the upper line, strap length, and heel profile at the prototype stage. Satin, lambskin, calf leather, and other published materials provide a starting vocabulary for that conversation; availability for an individual commission should be confirmed.

After an initial consultation, the shoemaker records precise foot measurements, impressions, and volumes. A pair of lasts is made from that information, then used for a prototype fitting. This lets the client discuss both fit and the design's proportions before the finished pair is delivered. The ordering page states one to three months from order to the final appointment.

Published starting prices are EUR 5,500 for women's footwear and EUR 7,200 for men's footwear, checked on October 13, 2026. Customer appointments are offered at the listed Paris salons; those meeting addresses should not be described as proof that every production operation takes place inside the salon. Massaro also has an orthopedic department, which is a separate clinical service rather than a promise attached to every fashion commission.

Maison Corthay

Workshop and boutique

Pierre Corthay established Maison Corthay at 1 rue Volney in Paris in 1990. The official history records his Compagnons du Devoir training from 1979 and describes the house's development around a distinctive vision of men's footwear. Color, silhouette, and individuality remain prominent in the current account of the atelier.

The bespoke page makes a particularly useful distinction between two measurement services. Grande-Mesure uses a last exclusive to the client and allows the design of the upper and material choices to be developed around the commission. Petite Mesure, introduced in 2021, starts with a ready-to-wear last adapted to the customer, together with previously developed patterns.

Corthay states that both are made in the rue Volney atelier and that the shoemaking itself is the same; the starting point for the last and pattern differs. This gives a client a concrete comparison to request instead of relying on the word custom. The broader house also offers ready-to-wear personalization, which should be kept distinct from either measured service.

For men drawn to expressive formal footwear, this is a documented Paris workshop to contact. A separate women's made-to-measure service is not stated in the reviewed pages, so it is not assumed here. The accessible bespoke description does not specify a current starting price, delivery period, or exact number of fittings. Ask the rue Volney team to quote the selected service and describe its fitting sequence before commissioning.

Germany — Berlin

The Berlin profiles illustrate both a manufacturing operation with several consultation branches and an individual maker's practice. Multiple branches are not counted as additional shoemakers.

Meisterschuh

Manufacturer; consultation branches

Meisterschuh explicitly makes handmade Maßschuhe for women and men in its Berlin manufacturing operation. The service page cites more than 30 years of experience, without supplying a business founding year. Its several consultation branches are parts of one operation, rather than additional independent workshops in this guide.

The published range includes business shoes, Oxfords, boots, sandals, and sneakers, with advice on materials and construction. Those options make it relevant to readers seeking measured footwear beyond the formal men's Oxford. Discuss the particular model and construction rather than assuming every sandal, sneaker, and business shoe is assembled in the same way.

The detailed production page records manual measurements and foot impressions. A beechwood last blank is then modified with cork foam and sanding to create the customer's individual last. A trial shoe is checked before the upper pattern is developed. This is an example of personal last-making through adaptation, so it should not be described as carving every last from an untouched block.

Meisterschuh describes extensive handwork in subsequent upper, sole, heel, and finishing operations. Its clinical orthopedic services remain distinct from fashion commissions; this guide does not repeat the site's medical or comfort guarantees. Arrange a consultation at a listed Berlin branch and request the price, fitting schedule, and collection arrangements. No applicable public commission price or customer delivery period was identified in the reviewed service pages.

Anna Rakemann

Workshop; appointment location to confirm

Anna Rakemann presents an individual approach to shoemaking in Berlin. Her official introduction says she personally carries out the last-making, upper work, thread preparation, and bottom construction. It names classic men's shoes, boots, and evening footwear, and describes traditional tools and more than 300 operations. The reviewed site does not give a founding year.

The process begins with consultation, model development, leather selection, and measurements. The maker then builds the lasts, creates the upper pattern, and constructs trial shoes. A fitting follows, with adjustments where needed, before the final pair is made. The established lasts can be reused for later models.

A classic men's measured service is explicitly described. The references to boots and evening shoes do not independently establish a separate women's bespoke offer; prospective women clients should ask the maker about the intended style. This distinction preserves the published scope without treating a missing gender label as evidence that commissions for women are refused.

The contact page provides a customer telephone and email. The legal notice identifies a Berlin business address, but the reviewed customer page does not establish it as the fitting venue, so this guide directs readers to confirm the appointment address. Ask about the available appointment dates, price, number of trial sessions, and delivery period. No numerical commission price or promised completion date was found in the reviewed pages.

United Arab Emirates — Dubai

The Dubai profile concerns a local manufacturer and its individual-measure service. Italian materials or partner factories do not turn its Dubai customer address into an Italian production address.

Italian Shoe Factory

Manufacturer and showroom

Italian Shoe Factory has its design and small-batch production headquarters in Dubai. The official homepage dates the business's inception to 1995 and names owner Amin Virani. Italian materials and associate factories in Italy are part of its wider operation; they should not obscure the documented Dubai manufacturing location for small-batch work.

The maker lists men's casual and dress shoes alongside women's sandals, flats, heels, and boots, plus bridal and evening footwear. Its individual bespoke page explicitly illustrates women's bespoke work and allows heel height, model, shape, and sole choices. The relevant consumer service is the measured commission, rather than a private-label production package or a repair of an existing designer shoe.

A master last-maker takes foot measurements and develops the individual last. The service page describes a second visit to fit a mock-up, followed by a final fitting and delivery appointment. The house retains the last for subsequent orders. A separate process article explains that construction can vary, including welted, Blake, and adhesive methods.

The bespoke page states a minimum of four weeks; the FAQ gives four to five weeks for bespoke work. Confirm the current schedule rather than treating either as guaranteed. The FAQ counts two appointments through the prototype stage, while the service page includes a third for final delivery. The booking and contact pages also disagree about Friday opening. Ask the team to confirm visits; no individual bespoke starting price is published in the reviewed service description.

China — Beijing

Beijing's documented bespoke process is included below. The accessible sources do not establish a separate women's program, and a generic service description is not assigned an invented gender scope.

ACME Shoemaker

Manufacturer; Beijing customer location

ACME Shoemaker's official history places its founding in Beijing in early 2020. The same history distinguishes the young brand from the much longer experience of its artisans. Its bespoke page gives a Beijing customer address in Chaoyang District; this is kept separate from the brand's Shanghai and overseas locations.

The bespoke service confirms foot measurements, last-making, and a trial shoe used to review the design and fit. The maker's craft page describes hand cutting, hand welting, hand stitching of soles, and hand finishing. These construction details document handwork, while the measurements and personal last establish the separate basis for a made-to-measure commission.

The reviewed bespoke text does not explicitly divide its service into men's and women's offerings. Its formal leather footwear provides design references, but this guide does not turn a generic service description into a confirmed women's program or claim an officially labeled unisex service. Readers of either group should ask whether the intended model, heel, and proportions can be commissioned.

The accessible bespoke description does not publish a commission price, a delivery period, or an exact number of trial fittings. It also contains a form with MTO and semi-bespoke options, so an enquiry should name the fully bespoke measurement and trial-shoe process being discussed. Ask where measurements, trials, and final collection will take place; the public customer address alone does not establish every production step's street location.

Japan — Tokyo

Tokyo provides detailed examples of both women's and men's measurement services and of differences between the last-making tiers. A consultation address is distinguished from a separately unspecified production address.

ORDER MADE SHOES HOSHINO

Manufacturer; Ginza consultation location

HOSHINO identifies shoemaker Shunji Hoshino and says its shoes are made in a Tokyo atelier. Its customer reservation page lists the Ginza flagship. The reviewed sources do not establish a founding year or the atelier's separate production address, so the listed Ginza address is presented as a consultation location.

Both genders have a documented menu. Royal order uses a dedicated last and two trials; bespoke order adapts an existing last and has one trial. Both are estimated at six months. MTO uses an existing last without a trial, at about three months.

The women's pages show pumps, mules, and booties, while the men's pages include Oxfords, Derbies, and loafers. These design references should be discussed with the selected measurement service rather than treating every online model as automatically a royal commission. The craft account also shows the use of machines alongside handwork.

The English menu displayed USD on October 13, 2026. First-pair prices include shoe, last, and consultation: women USD 2,590 bespoke / 4,900 royal; men USD 4,450 / 7,560. Later pairs are USD 1,170 / 2,100 for women and USD 2,225 / 3,860 for men. These are published amounts, without currency conversion. Confirm a Japanese-market quote; full advance payment is specified.

Yohei Fukuda

Workshop and appointment shop

Yohei Fukuda founded his Tokyo workshop in 2008 after studying and working in English shoemaking. The official biography identifies him as the last-maker who measures clients and oversees the creative and making process with his team. The current shop is listed in Kitaaoyama, with visits by appointment.

The service menu separates House Style Bespoke from bespoke. Both take individual measurements, prepare personalized lasts, and use trial fitting shoes. House Style Bespoke develops a commission from the house's design samples; bespoke allows the client's requested design and an individual pattern. The men's footwear orientation is stated in the official shop materials; a women's bespoke program is not confirmed in the reviewed pages.

The process includes checking fitting samples, measurements and photographs, last-making, pattern and upper work, a trial pair, and last adjustments before final construction. The trial fitting account explains that the shoe is cut open to examine how it holds the foot. The measured tiers have hand-stitched soles, whereas ready-to-wear and MTO use machine-stitched soles.

The official menu lists House Style Bespoke Classic from JPY 700,000 and Heritage from JPY 720,000. Bespoke starts at JPY 820,000 for a first pair and JPY 740,000 for a second. It shows 24 months for a first measured pair and 8–12 months for a subsequent pair, with a repeat-client availability note. Confirm whether a new commission can currently be accepted before planning fittings or travel.

India — New Delhi

The New Delhi selection is based on a service page that explains measurements and stock-last modification. Design customization alone did not qualify other examined candidates as measured shoemaking.

Dapper Shoes Co.

Workshop and customer studio

Dapper Shoes Co. dates its start to 2016 and identifies its workshop in Okhla, New Delhi. Its homepage also specifies that custom shoes are offered exclusively at Okhla among its local studios. The reviewed offer is directed to men; a separate women's measurement service is not published in the pages used here.

Although the service page uses bespoke terminology, its practical explanation is precise: it takes measurements of each foot and modifies a stock last. It proceeds to the final pair without a trial shoe. That is the method to compare with a commission using a newly developed last and a trial pair, rather than assuming the two offer identical fitting stages.

The listed design scope includes Oxfords, loafers, Derbies, monk straps, and boots. Clients can discuss the leather, sole, toe shape, and heel. The page names Blake-stitched and cemented constructions. It also describes a guided remote consultation using measurements and photographs, giving clients outside Delhi a published enquiry route.

Measured custom shoes start at INR 12,000, with the stated delivery period of five to twelve weeks from confirmation. The service page says a fit-related remake is offered; ask how that undertaking applies to the specific commission and any delivery arrangements. These are the maker's published terms checked on October 13, 2026. A conversation with the Okhla team should establish the final specification and quote before payment.

Russia — Moscow

The Moscow profile covers a published atelier address, local production, and distinct examples of women's and men's individual commissions.

Daria Detkina

Atelier and manufacturer

The Moscow atelier of Daria Detkina began with the designer's independent shoemaking practice in 2011. The official biography describes a background in leather-goods engineering and a team that develops footwear, lasts, platforms, and heels. The service page confirms that production takes place in Moscow.

Separate current catalogue sections present individual men's and women's commissions. Women's examples include pumps, ankle boots, flats, sandals, and bridal designs. Men's examples include lace-ups, boots, sandals, and sneakers. These pages establish the scope for both groups, while the measured service explains how a personal commission is developed.

The individual-last service starts with foot measurements, discussion of the foot's characteristics, and the intended use of the footwear. The atelier creates a last, makes a trial sample, and fits it; the published description says one or two fittings are commonly needed. An established last can support later styles, with changes to the toe area where appropriate.

The shoe-service page gives about one month as an approximate model-creation period, dependent on design complexity and foot characteristics. Ask for the full current commission schedule, including last development and fitting availability. Catalogue entries displayed zero rubles in the reviewed pages, so those fields are not treated as a genuine offer price. Request a written quote from the atelier, with the first-last work and final pair clearly identified.

Madrid demonstrates two different routes: women's design customization with width assessment, and a men's measured service commissioned in a showroom for Spanish manufacture.

Ioli Shoes

Manufacturer; customer store/atelier

Ioli's official history traces its beginnings to designer Cynthia Ioli's small Madrid shop more than two decades ago. It names Walter as creative director from 2023 and explains that designs are developed in the store and made by a small workshop team in Madrid. The current customer store/atelier is on Calle Mejía Lequerica.

This is a women's footwear service that combines design personalization with a limited, described fitting element. The consultation starts with a base shoe or ankle-boot model, then explores materials, colors, accessories, and the type and height of heel. The site describes half sizes from 32 to 44 and assessment of the wearer's width to determine whether an additional adjustment is needed.

That width assessment goes beyond choosing a color. It does not establish a newly carved personal last or a fully bespoke trial-shoe program, neither of which is specified in the reviewed service page. Ask which parts of the base model and width can actually be changed for the intended pair. No men's measured service is confirmed here.

The service page gives approximately four weeks and a EUR 70 personalization charge above the store model's price. The surcharge is not the total price of the shoes. It also describes a 50% deposit and balance on collection or receipt. Request a full model-specific quote with any fitting adjustment explained. The official store page lists inconsistent opening hours in different sections, so the contact block deliberately directs readers to arrange the visit.

Glent Shoes

Commissioning showroom

Glent's Madrid flagship offers a documented point for commissioning men's made-to-measure footwear. Its official appointment page lists advisor and podiatrist consultations at Calle de Claudio Coello 21. The company says its footwear is made in Spain; the store address does not establish that manufacture happens in Madrid.

Perfect Fit records the length, width, and instep height of each foot using 3D technology. The company says the particularities of each foot are incorporated into manufacture. Its measured collection includes lace-ups, loafers, monk straps, boots, and other designs, with options for leathers, colors, soles, stitching, and laces after the customer's last is established.

The measurement service should be distinguished from Glent Wear, the ready-to-wear collection offered in standard widths and half sizes. A scan alone does not reveal how an individual last is made or how a pair is checked. The reviewed pages do not fully describe that last-making method, a trial-shoe stage, or a guaranteed fitting count. Those are worthwhile questions for the flagship consultation.

No women's measured offer, business founding year, or complete measured-service price schedule was identified in the pages used here. Request a quote for the intended model and explain whether it will involve the Perfect Fit measurement service. Also confirm the lead time and any fitting revisions. This profile presents a Madrid commissioning showroom connected to Spanish manufacture, with no claim that it is a local hand-sewing workshop.

Italy — Rome

The Rome profiles combine documented local workshop addresses with current women's and men's su misura offers. The level of detail published about lasts and fittings differs between the makers.

Calzoleria Petrocchi

Workshop and customer shop

Tito Petrocchi founded the Roman workshop in 1946. Its official history follows the business through Bruno Ridolfi and identifies Daniela Ridolfi as the current proprietor. Film and theater collaborations form part of that history, while the present measured offer is documented independently on the su misura page.

Both men and women can commission footwear. The women's section gives lace-up examples and explicitly allows choices of style, heel height, and leather combinations, just as the men's service allows its own design choices. This is a current measured women's offer, rather than an inference from historical pairs or a ready-to-wear collection.

The process records the outline, length, and width of both feet, together with observations of the client standing and walking. The wooden last is worked manually in the Rome workshop, using sanding or added leather thicknesses to obtain the required proportions. The resulting personal form incorporates both measurements and the intended style.

The su misura page lists hand-executed constructions described by the house as Goodyear, Norwegian, and Tyrolean. Discuss which applies to the chosen model rather than treating one construction as universal. No usable public commission price, delivery period, or specified fitting count was identified in the reviewed pages. The customer shop is in Vicolo delle Ceste; the separate legal-office address is not offered here as a fitting venue. Use the official contact form or customer phone for a quote.

Laboratorio Artigianale Procopio

Workshop and showroom

Procopio combines a shoemaking laboratory and showroom in Rome's Centocelle district. The official introduction names Pier Giuseppe Procopio and describes generational craft experience, without giving a founding year. The same site identifies the workshop and customer shop at Via Tor de' Schiavi 74, providing a specific local route for a commission.

The measured footwear pages explicitly cover women and men. The range includes classic shoes, sandals, boots, and ankle boots, while the women's introduction also describes bridal and occasion work. Clients can discuss a drawing or reference design and the possibility of using fabric coordinated with an outfit. These design options sit alongside the stated su misura service, rather than replacing its fitting purpose.

The website mentions a home-measuring service, but it does not publish a complete account of last-making, trial shoes, or the number of fittings. It is therefore presented here as documented individual made-to-measure work with the detailed method to be established in consultation, rather than a verified fully bespoke last-and-trial program.

The workshop also makes footwear intended to accommodate removable insoles and sensitive feet. Those capabilities should be discussed separately from a fashion brief and do not support a general medical or comfort guarantee. No public measured-service price or delivery schedule was identified. Ask the workshop which measurements and fittings it needs, how a heel or sandal design can be adjusted, and whether home measurement is available for the intended commission.

Brazil — Rio de Janeiro

Rio de Janeiro: the official-source evidence gap

Separate searches for women's and men's measured footwear did not establish a local fashion workshop with enough official evidence for a main profile. That is a limit of this research, not evidence that such shoemakers do not operate in Rio de Janeiro. No atelier from another Brazilian city is substituted here.

The official Atelier Selvagem website establishes a Rio address and independent sneaker design, but the pages reviewed do not document an individual foot-measurement and personal-last commission. Nortec Ortopedia, also in Rio, describes clinical footwear made using plaster molds. That medical offer is distinct from a verified women's or men's fashion-bespoke service and is not counted among the main profiles.

Official sources: Atelier Selvagem · Nortec clinical footwear

For a prospective Rio commission, ask the maker for its own current service page, local fitting address, measurement method, last-making process, and design scope for the intended wearer. The phrase atendimento sob medida may refer to personal customer attention; sapatos personalizados may refer only to design choices. Neither phrase alone establishes that the footwear is built to individual foot measurements.

From First Measurements to the Finished Pair

Think of the order as a sequence of decisions, with the fitting method agreed at the beginning. The official processes in this guide share an interest in the individual wearer, but they do not support a universal timetable or an identical set of visits. A useful enquiry asks the maker to describe the exact sequence for the chosen service.

Begin with the brief and the measurement appointment

Describe the intended shoe in ordinary terms: formal or casual, low or high, restrained or decorative, for regular use or an occasion. Bring design references if the maker welcomes them. Ask how the intended shape, heel, material, fastening, and sole can be reconciled with the fitting method. Settle the overall brief before focusing on small details such as a monogram or patina.

A measurement appointment can involve more than a length reading. Petrocchi records both feet and observes the customer standing and walking. The point for a client is to learn what the maker records and how that information changes the last and final specification. If measurement is offered remotely, ask for the maker's own instructions and how the information is checked.

Understand the last and the design boundary

The last is the working form around which the shoe is constructed. Ask whether it is newly created, adapted from a blank, modified from an existing house last, or used unchanged. Find out whether the last is kept for you and what happens if you later request a different toe shape, heel, or type of footwear. A previous successful pair does not explain every future design change.

The same discussion should establish the pattern and material brief. A service based on house designs may offer a narrower starting point than a commission developed from a new drawing. Neither approach needs a grander label to be useful: the decision is whether the documented range of changes answers your particular brief. Request a written specification so the design and fitting stages remain connected.

Agree on the fitting method before the final pair

Some makers use a trial shoe; others normally fit a completed first pair. Canons describes a trial fitting before the outer sole is attached. London John Lobb normally makes the first pair through to completion. Ask which stage allows changes to the last, upper pattern, or heel, and how a further adjustment is handled if the first fitting does not resolve the issue.

Confirm delivery, later orders, and care

Treat the published waiting period as the maker's stated estimate for that service, then obtain dates for your own order. The number of hours spent working on a shoe is a different figure from the calendar wait. Materials, workshop capacity, and the arrangement of appointments need to be addressed by the maker; an article cannot supply the final commitment.

Before collection, ask what is included with the pair, how to raise a fitting concern, and which aftercare work should return to the house. For a future order, clarify whether the established last, pattern, and design remain usable and whether their continued suitability will be checked. These questions make a personal commission easier to compare without assuming a universal refund, adjustment, or repair policy.

What to Ask Before Commissioning Bespoke Shoes

Use these questions for a women's or men's commission. They are a practical enquiry brief, not a statement that every workshop offers every option or follows the same conditions.

  1. Which service are you quoting: a new personal-last commission, an adapted-last service, or design customization on a standard last?
  2. What measurements will you take of each foot, and where will measurement and fittings happen?
  3. Can the intended model, heel height, fastening, and upper line be developed for me? What design boundaries apply?
  4. Which parts of the last or pattern will be created or modified, and is that work included in the first-pair quote?
  5. Will there be trial shoes? How many visits are planned, and at what stage can fit or design changes be made?
  6. Which construction applies to my pair, and which operations are performed by hand?
  7. What is the total price in the quoted currency, including the last, chosen materials, taxes, shipping, and any optional work?
  8. What deposit is due, what is the remaining payment schedule, and what written terms apply to this individual commission?
  9. What delivery estimate applies after confirmation, and how should an occasion deadline be handled?
  10. What happens if the first fit needs changes, and which costs or additional appointments could apply?
  11. Will my lasts be retained for future orders, and how are later prices, design changes, and aftercare quoted?

For an occasion shoe, add the date and the design constraints to your first enquiry. A workshop can tell you whether the requested heel, material, and fitting schedule can be accepted. For everyday footwear, explain the intended use and the features you want the shoemaker to evaluate. Let the maker describe the proposed solution and its limits.

Explore Made-to-Measure Shoemaking Services on ALVAU

Begin with ALVAU's dedicated Tailoring shoes to measure service category when looking for a maker who can discuss footwear around your measurements. The category is the navigation destination supplied for this guide; the independent profiles above are based on the makers' own websites.

Prepare the same brief for each prospective service: women's or men's footwear, the intended model, the city where you can attend, the desired material and heel, and the occasion or delivery window. Compare the actual measurement and last-making method, the fitting sequence, the quote, and the aftercare terms. A service name becomes useful when the maker explains what it means for your pair.

Check the scope of any offer you find before contacting the provider. Ask where the commission is measured and made, and whether an initial discussion, a trial pair, or later fittings require travel. A local showroom can be useful even when manufacture is elsewhere, provided those arrangements are clear.

The workshops in this article are not presented as registered ALVAU sellers or marketplace partners. The research did not establish active listings, booking or payment functions, or a claim of worldwide exclusivity for this category. The link remains an invitation to begin your search and evaluate the specific service information available to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between bespoke and made-to-measure shoes?

Compare the last and pattern work, not just the name. Bespoke may develop an individual last and pattern; a made-to-measure or semi-bespoke service may adapt a house last or design. Corthay's Grande-Mesure and Petite Mesure explain that difference. A maker should describe its own terminology in practical terms.

Official sources: Corthay services

Does made-to-order footwear always involve individual foot measurements?

No. A made-to-order offer can change design, materials, or finish while retaining an existing last. Yohei Fukuda's service menu separates MTO from the personal-last and trial-fitting program used for its measured bespoke tiers. Ask precisely what changes to fit are included.

Official sources: Yohei Fukuda ordering

Can women commission bespoke heels, flats, and bridal shoes?

Yes, where the maker confirms the intended service and model. Massaro explicitly describes bridal sur-mesure, and Petrocchi offers measured women's footwear with heel choices. Canons confirms women's measured shoes but excludes high heels. Select the workshop by its actual design scope.

Official sources: Massaro services · Petrocchi women's su misura · Canons FAQ

What types of men's shoes can be made to measure?

The documented range includes formal lace-ups, loafers, boots, and other designs, depending on the house. Francis Waplinger publishes men's bespoke examples; HOSHINO presents Oxfords, Derbies, and loafers with an ordering menu. Confirm the particular model and construction within the selected measured tier.

How is a personal shoe last created or adapted?

The approaches vary. London John Lobb describes carving a solid wooden block from measurements and tracings. Meisterschuh describes modifying a beechwood blank with additions and sanding. Ask whether the finished last is retained for your subsequent commissions and how later design changes are handled.

Official sources: John Lobb craft · Meisterschuh process

How many fittings will a bespoke commission require?

There is no common fixed count. Some makers describe trial shoes; others usually fit a completed first pair. Francis Waplinger publishes a minimum of two fitting appointments for new bespoke clients. Ask your maker which visits and opportunities for adjustment apply to the selected service.

Official sources: Waplinger ordering

Why can the first pair cost more than later pairs?

A first quote may include last development that an established customer does not need again in the same form. Francis Waplinger includes a one-time last fee in first-pair prices and excludes it on later orders using the personal last. Ask how your maker quotes a subsequent design or a changed last.

Official sources: Waplinger pricing

Do I need to visit the shoemaker in person?

It depends on the service. Dapper describes a guided remote measurement option as well as its Okhla studio. London John Lobb recommends maker-taken measurements but also discusses alternatives for clients who cannot attend. Establish the measurement and fitting arrangements with the workshop before planning the order.

Official sources: Dapper commissioning · John Lobb international FAQ

What should I ask about alterations and aftercare?

Ask when fit concerns can be addressed, which changes are included, and where repairs should be made. Canons specifically recommends returning its hand-welted shoes for resoling. Obtain the terms for your commission rather than assuming that the conditions of a stock-shoe purchase apply.

Official sources: Canons aftercare FAQ

Choose the Process That Matches Your Brief

A worthwhile commission begins with a maker who can explain the measurements, the last, the fitting, and the design boundaries for your pair. Choose the process that answers your needs, whether that means a personal-last Oxford, an adapted house design, a bridal heel, or an individual flat. Keep the quote, appointments, and aftercare clear from the first conversation.
